Handmade Leather Aprons for Professionals
Leather Aprons — Handmade for People Who Work With Their Hands
A leather apron is a protective garment cut from thick hide, worn over the torso to shield clothing and skin from sparks, heat, blades, dye and workshop debris. Unlike cotton or canvas, leather resists burns and abrasion instead of melting or tearing, which is why it has been the working apron of blacksmiths, farriers and butchers for centuries.
We make every apron by hand in our European workshop from full grain and crazy horse cowhide, with free engraving on every piece. A cotton apron lasts a season in a busy shop. A leather one, wiped down and conditioned twice a year, outlives the tools hanging in its pockets.
Which apron fits your work
- Split-leg apron — covers the torso and both thighs, with a slit up the centre so you can walk, kneel and sit freely. Removable leg straps secure one leg, both, or neither. Built for blacksmiths, farriers, woodworkers and anyone moving around a shop floor.
- Full bib apron — chest and legs covered in one panel, maximum coverage and easy wipe-down. The choice for chefs, BBQ, butchery and grilling.
- Half apron (waist apron) — covers from the waist down, light and fast to put on, with pockets exactly where your hands are. Made for barbers, baristas, bartenders and florists.
- Waxed canvas and leather apron — a canvas body with leather pockets and straps. Lighter and cooler than full hide, for long shifts in warm rooms.
How to choose
- Straps. Cross-back straps spread the weight across both shoulders. Neck-loop aprons hang everything from your cervical spine, and you feel it by hour four. Every apron we make uses cross-back straps for this reason.
- Pockets. Count your tools first. Barbers and tattoo artists need narrow, deep pockets for scissors, clippers and machines. Woodworkers need wide pockets for chisels and a pencil slot. Chefs usually want fewer, larger pockets and a towel loop.
- Hardware. Brass and copper rivets do not rust. Nickel-plated steel corrodes in humid kitchens and anywhere near water.
- Thickness. Between 1.8 mm and 2.5 mm for general workshop use. Thinner than 1.5 mm tears under tool weight; thicker than 3 mm is stiff and heavy to wear all day.
- Leather type. Crazy horse cowhide is waxed, water-resistant and scratches into a patina — it looks better dirty. Full grain is untreated and darkens smoothly over years. Neither is better; crazy horse hides wear, full grain shows it.
Who these are made for
- Blacksmiths and farriers — split-leg coverage at the forge and anvil, waxed hide against sparks and scale
- Barbers and hairdressers — a light half apron that sheds hair and resists dye
- Tattoo artists — dark leather that wipes clean of ink and disinfectant, with pockets sized for machines
- Woodworkers and carpenters — chisel pockets, a pencil slot, and a hide that shrugs off shavings
- Chefs, grill masters and butchers — full coverage, a towel loop, and a surface that wipes down between services
- Baristas and bartenders — short, water-resistant, quick to put on and take off
- Florists and gardeners — pockets for shears and twine, leather that survives wet stems
Who to give one to
- Someone who has just opened their own shop — engraved with the business name or logo

- Third wedding anniversary — leather is the traditional material
- Father's Day — for a parent who cooks, grills or builds

Safety
Leather aprons protect well against sparks, hot debris, splashes and sharp edges in everyday workshop conditions. They are not certified PPE. Our aprons are not rated for industrial welding, chainsaw work or sustained high-heat environments — if your work requires certified protection, buy certified equipment.
Care
Wipe with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Condition two or three times a year with leather balm. Do not soak, do not machine wash, do not dry near a heat source. A leather apron that is cleaned and conditioned lasts well over ten years in daily professional use.
Common questions
What is the best leather apron for a blacksmith? A split-leg apron in thick crazy horse cowhide with cross-back straps and removable leg straps. The split-leg design lets you move around the forge and anvil, and the waxed hide resists sparks and scale better than untreated leather.
How thick should a leather apron be? Between 1.8 mm and 2.5 mm for general workshop use. Thinner than 1.5 mm tears under tool weight; thicker than 3 mm is stiff and heavy to wear through a full day.
Are leather aprons hot to wear? Full leather is warmer than canvas. If you work in a hot kitchen or a warm climate, a waxed canvas apron with leather pockets keeps most of the durability and far less of the heat.
Do they fit both men and women? Yes. Our aprons are universal size with fully adjustable cross-back and waist straps. For a precise fit we also make aprons to measure.
Can I wash a leather apron? No. Wipe it clean and condition it. Water and detergent strip the oils out of the hide and cause it to crack.
How long does a leather apron last? With basic care, well over ten years of professional daily use. That is why it costs more than a cotton apron up front and less across its life.
Can I get my logo on it? Yes, at no extra cost. Send us your logo and we engrave it into the leather, where it will not wear off. Popular with barbershops, restaurants and tattoo studios ordering for a whole team.
Leather or waxed canvas? If you work with heat, sparks or blades, choose leather. If you work long shifts in a warm room and want something light, choose waxed canvas with leather pockets — the durable material sits where the wear actually happens.
