Why the zipper matters

A jacket fails at the zipper long before the leather gives out. RiRi makes zippers in Switzerland for luxury outerwear brands; the teeth are machined rather than stamped, and the pull has weight to it.

You notice it the first time you close the jacket, and you notice it again in year three when it still runs the same way.

Ribbed waistline

The ribbing at the hem pulls the jacket close at the waist, so it does not ride up when you sit or lean forward. It also gives the silhouette its shape — wider at the chest, narrow at the base — which is why this cut flatters most builds.

Red and white

Black leather jackets are everywhere and anonymous. Red with white panels comes from vintage racing livery, and it is the reason this jacket gets noticed from across a room or a car park.

Care

Store on a wide hanger away from direct heat. Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Apply leather conditioner two or three times a year, paying attention to the elbows where the leather flexes. On the white panels use a conditioner made for light leather to avoid darkening.
