What Is Crazy Horse Leather — and Does It Come from Horses?
It does not come from horses. Crazy Horse is a full grain cowhide, named for its traditional use in horse saddles and tack — which is also why it is sometimes called saddle leather. The hide is cow, the name is about what it was historically made into.
What makes it Crazy Horse is the finish. The surface is treated with wax and oils that sit in the top layer of the hide rather than coating it. Rub the leather and the colour shifts lighter where you pressed, then settles back. That movement is the point: every mark becomes part of the piece instead of damage to it.
Why Crazy Horse leather suits a hanging planter:
- It handles damp — the wax treatment gives it more tolerance for humidity than untreated leather, which matters near a watered plant
- It marks on purpose — a scuff on coated leather looks like a flaw; on Crazy Horse it looks like age
