What gunmetal is

Gunmetal is a dark grey metal finish with a low sheen — closer to charcoal than to silver. It takes its name from the colour of gun barrels, which is also where its character comes from: deliberately subdued rather than decorative.

Against black leather it reads as a shade lighter than the strap, so the buckle is visible as a shape without announcing itself.

Why dark hardware

Polished silver has to agree with your watch and shoe buckles. Gunmetal is dark enough that it does not compete — it works with steel watches, black watches and no watch at all, which is why it has become the default on modern menswear hardware.

It also hides wear. Polished finishes show every scratch as a bright line; a dark finish absorbs them.

Why 38 mm

Thirty-eight millimetres fits the belt loops on almost every pair of jeans, chinos and tailored trousers made. Wider belts jam in narrow loops on suit trousers; narrower ones look lost in denim.

Why full grain

Full grain is the outer layer of the hide with the grain intact. Corrected and bonded leather is sanded and coated, which is why it cracks at the fold within two years. Full grain darkens and softens instead, keeping its shape.

Measure a belt he already wears, from the buckle fold to the hole he uses most. That measurement in inches is his belt size — not his trouser waist, which runs smaller.

Free personalization

Engraving is included at no cost: initials, a name, a date or a logo — on the inside of the strap where only the wearer sees it, or on the outside if you prefer.

Care

Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Apply leather conditioner two or three times a year to keep the black deep. Avoid abrasive cloths on the buckle, which can lighten the gunmetal finish.
