Why a square buckle

Almost every belt sold comes with a rounded buckle, which is why they all look the same under a jacket. A square buckle changes the geometry at the waist — it lines up with the squared edges of a blazer hem and the straight line of a shirt placket rather than cutting across them.

It is a small difference and it is the one people register without being able to name.

Brushed, not polished

Brushed metal has a fine directional grain that diffuses light instead of reflecting it. The practical effect: the buckle does not flash when you move, and scratches blend into the existing texture rather than standing out as bright lines.

Why 38 mm

Thirty-eight millimetres fits the belt loops on almost every pair of jeans, chinos and tailored trousers made. Wider belts jam in narrow loops on suit trousers; narrower ones look lost in denim.

Why full grain

Full grain is the outer layer of the hide with the grain intact. Corrected and bonded leather is sanded and coated, which is why it cracks at the fold within two years. Full grain darkens and softens instead, keeping its shape.

Measure a belt he already wears, from the buckle fold to the hole he uses most. That measurement in inches is his belt size — not his trouser waist, which runs smaller.

Free personalization

Engraving is included at no cost: initials, a name, a date or a logo — on the inside of the strap where only the wearer sees it, or on the outside if you prefer.

Care

Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Apply leather conditioner two or three times a year to keep the black deep. Avoid soaking in water; if it gets wet, let it dry away from direct heat.
