Why matte on matte

A polished buckle on a matte strap reads as a mismatch — the hardware announces itself while the leather stays quiet. Matte black against matte brown keeps the whole belt in one register, so it disappears under a jacket instead of drawing the eye.

It also ages consistently. Polished metal scratches visibly; matte black marks less and does not develop the worn-through patches that plated chrome gets at the fold.

Why 38 mm

Thirty-eight millimetres fits the belt loops on almost every pair of jeans, chinos and tailored trousers made. Wider belts jam in narrow loops on suit trousers; narrower ones look lost in denim. This width goes through both.

Why full grain

Full grain is the outer layer of the hide with the grain intact. Corrected and bonded leather is sanded and coated, which is why it cracks at the fold within two years. Full grain darkens and softens instead, keeping its shape.

Measure a belt he already wears, from the buckle fold to the hole he uses most. That measurement in inches is his belt size — not his trouser waist, which runs smaller.

Care

Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Apply leather conditioner two or three times a year. Avoid soaking in water; if it gets wet, let it dry away from direct heat.
