Why plain black

A black belt is the one most men wear most often, and the one they think about least. That is exactly why it should be full grain: it takes daily buckling, folding and stretching, and cheap leather gives out at the fold within two seasons.

Plain also means versatile. It goes under a jacket without competing, pairs with black shoes without needing to match them exactly, and does not look out of place with denim.

Why brushed silver

Brushed metal catches less light than polished chrome, so the buckle stays quiet rather than drawing the eye. It is the finish that works in an office and at a dinner without looking like either was the intention.

Why full grain

Full grain is the outer layer of the hide with the grain intact. Corrected and bonded leather is sanded and coated, which is why it cracks at the fold. Full grain darkens and softens instead, keeping its shape for years.

Why 38 mm

Thirty-eight millimetres fits the belt loops on almost every pair of jeans, chinos and tailored trousers made. Wider belts jam in narrow loops on suit trousers; narrower ones look lost in denim. This width goes through both.

Measure a belt he already wears, from the buckle fold to the hole he uses most. That measurement in inches is his belt size — not his trouser waist, which runs smaller.

Care

Wipe with a soft dry cloth. Apply leather conditioner two or three times a year to keep the black deep. Avoid soaking in water; if it gets wet, let it dry away from direct heat.
